The Bomber Wrestling Girls Pin the Lions - By Zyen Vergara

On Tuesday night, December 5th, I had the opportunity to watch the Bomber girls wrestle out on the mats. Competing against Kennewick High School, the Bomber Varsity girls were pushed to succeed and did just that. The first girl to take on Kennewick High's opponent was Savannah Dufault, who weighed in at a hundred and twenty pounds. Savannah was able to pin her opponent in the second round, winning by fall. Onto the second match of the night, Madison Davis, at a hundred and twenty-five pounds, was putting up a fight. It was not easy to take down, and Kennewick lion Delaney Rush continued to grab and flip Madison into their third round. With the third round ending, Delaney Rush takes the win by points. Walking out and onto the mat, Ava Bagwell, at a hundred and thirty-five pounds, looked ready to win. Ava was able to grab her opponent's leg, dropping her to the ground and pinning her onto her back. Adding points to the overall score.

Moving into the fourth match, Bomber athlete Ashlynn Dobson, weighing in at a hundred and thirty-five pounds, takes on Vanessa R. Ashlynn and Vanessa wrestled around the mats, flipping each other over and over, neither one going down easy. All three rounds finished with a Lion on top, the second one of the night. Continuing with yet another victory for the Kennewick Lions, Melaney Alverez, weighing in at one hundred and forty pounds, pinned Richland bomber Kiana Kawai. While watching the sixth match-up, in the first round, Jazzlyn and Jocelyn had each other on their backs, hoping to defeat their opponent. Jazzlyn had the advantage in positions, keeping Jocelyn on her back, and was able to win by pin. Jazzlyn Gonzalez gained points for the Kennewick Lions wrestling Jocelyn Chavez. The seventh girl to go out onto the mats weighed in at one hundred and fifty pounds, hoping to show off her skill and strength, Portia Harker. Unfortunately, Portia won by forfeit due to the fact that there was no opponent in her weight class.

Kyndra Casias was able to wrestle only if she wrestled heavier than her weight class, and the choice was hers. Kyndra agreed to wrestle Kennewick Lion Jaily Lopez, who weighed in at one hundred and seventy pounds. With their first and second rounds full of grabbing legs and being thrown every which way, in the third round, Jaily gets Kyndra on her back and wins by a pin. Going into the ninth match at one hundred and ninety pounds, we are lucky to see Yaneece Sanchez go into her first round with determination and strength. With only seconds left of the first round, Yaneece had her opponent on her back, but unfortunately, the first round ended. Yaneece, going into the second round pumped up from her close takedown, grabs her opponent, flips her on her back, and is able to keep her there, taking the win by fall. Close to the end, we have one of our strongest girls Amy Ordaz competing against a two hundred and thirty-five-pound lion. Amy put in the work and was able to get her competitor to the floor on her back and take the win by pin.

With only four more girls left to wrestle, Skadi Carman, at one hundred pounds, shows her strength in the first round, coming close to pinning her challenger multiple times; at the start of the second round, Skadi uses her skill and pins the lady lion. Jolie Ah Yat, weighing in at one hundred and five pounds, is the second girl of the night to win by forfeit due to no opponent in her weight class. Another win for the Lady Bombers. The thirteenth wrestler of the night, Juliet Polomsky, weighing in at one hundred and ten pounds, shows her muscle and dedication to win by pinning her opponent in the first round. Last but not least, bomber wrestler Savannah Thorpe, eager to get out on the mat and defeat the Kennewick lion, does just that. Savannah used her skill accordingly and pinned the Kennewick lion in the first round. Ending the night with a Bomber victory, the overall score was 54-26.

After the dual match-up against Kennewick, I was able to talk to Coach John Nicacio. Finding out this was his fifth year coaching girls wrestling, I asked him, “What do you think your future looks like for your team?” Coach Nicacio proudly responded with, “ Our future looks very bright, and I have an elite team.” Following up with another question, I asked him, “Are there any improvements you strive for as a whole team in the upcoming year?” Coach Nicacio stated that he would like to see a higher attack rate from his team, he wants to see the girl wrestlers compete for six minutes straight at their highest intensity, and he wants each individual on the team to reach their maximum potential. We here at Atomic Times are excited to see just that.
